Athos comes to Tara to enquire into the death of his father, who was brutally murdered by the Fascists in 1936. Here he discovers that three old acquaintances of his father’s are still alive as well as the alleged murderer or instigator. Yet, was Athos Magnani senior really a hero or was he actually a traitor? Can the citizens of Tara be considered real socialists or are they just mere cowards? Athos junior does not really want to know and resolves to leave, but no trains seem to have travelled there for a long time. Did Athos Magnani really exist?
