In 1937, Marcello marries Giulia. While tormented by the alleged death of a driver, who had attempted to seduce him, he decides to join the Fascist police and finds himself ordered to take his wife on a honeymoon to Paris, where he can gain access to the inner circle of an anti-fascist teacher, professor Quadri, in order to carry out the mission of killing him. Yet, not only the professor, but also his wife Anna will fall victim to this homicidal ambush. Later in 1943, as Rome is rejoicing over the fall of Fascism, Marcello stumbles upon the driver, who happens to be unequivocally alive. Marcello becomes very upset and blames him for all the misfortunes in his life.
