In this non-competitive section the Petruzzelli Theatre will host the Italian premieres of seven films, and a Cine-concert.
- ROMAN J. ISRAEL, ESQ. (End of Justice: nessuno è innocente) by Dan Gilroy with Denzel Washington, Colin Farrell – USA 2017, 122’ (Warner Bros Entert. Italia) – April 21
Denzel Washington stars as Roman J. Israel, a determined defense attorney, whose career has always been defined by a relentless activism. His quiet life is overturned when a tumultuous series of events seems to challenge his ideals. Colin Farrell costars as a wealthy and ruthless lawyer, who takes on Roman into his new law firm.

Besides the films, the evening program of the Petruzzelli Theatre will present a special event on April 22nd: a cine-concert of 90 minutes commemorating the great Maestro on the 100th anniversary of his birth, with images from his films and with his music and songs, newly arranged and played by renown musicians, as an homage to Trovajoli’s passion for jazz. The Maestro also wrote the scores of almost all the films by Ettore Scola, honorary president of Bif&st and actual president until his passing. The event will also include the last audiovisual interview of the Maestro (17’), made for the 2013 edition of Bif&st, just a few days before his death, and the documentary Armando Trovajoli. Cent’anni di musica by Mario Canale and Annarosa Morri, programmed in the Multicinema Galleria on April 21st at 17 in Screen 1.

Sawyer Valentini is a young woman obsessively pursued by a stalker. She ultimately decides to leave Boston, rebuilding her life somewhere else. Seeking peace of mind, she enrolls in therapy sessions but is involuntarily committed to a mental institution, where she is confronted by her greatest fear—but is this real or merely a product of her delusion?
- THE REPORTS ON SARAH AND SALEEM by Muayad Alayan with Sivane Kretchner, Adeeb Safadi – Palestine-Germany-Netherlands-Mexico 2017, 131’ (Satine Film) – April 24
An extra-marital affair between an Israeli woman and a Palestinian man takes a dangerous turn of events when they are spotted in the wrong place at the wrong time. In a whirlwind of twists and unpredictable circumstances, Sarah and Saleem are caught up in something bigger than themselves, a situation which goes beyond their family obligations and becomes a political case.
- LA DOULEUR (Memoir of Pain) by Emmanuel Finkiel with Mélanie Thierry, Benoît Magimel, Emmanuel Bourdieu – France 2017, 125’ – April 25
In the 1944 Nazi-occupied France, young talented writer Marguerite is an active Resistance member with her husband Robert Antelme. When he is deported by the Gestapo, she dives into a desperate struggle to get him back. She develops a chilling relationship with local Vichy collaborator Rabier and takes terrible risks to save Robert, playing a cat-and-mouse of unpredictable meetings all over Paris.Her name is Marguerite Duras.
- DER HAUPTMANN (The Captain) by Robert Schwentke with Max Hubacher, Milan Peschel, Frederik Lau – Germany-Poland-France, 2018, 118’ – April 26
1945. The Allies force the Nazi army to withdraw. What would happen if a war deserter stole a Captain’s identity and started to convince soldiers to join him for a special mission? The hunt begins.
This film is also included in the competitive section “International Panorama”.
- PRIMA CHE LA NOTTE (Before the Night) by Daniele Vicari with Fabrizio Gifuni and Lorenza Indovina – Italy 2018, 119’ – April 27
Pippo Fava is an original and versatile artist as well as a faithful chronicler of his time. In 1980, he becomes the editor-in-chief of a local newspaper in Catania and by applying the idea of a free journalism, he decides to open an actual school of journalism. Along with his young trainees, he also creates the monthly magazine I Siciliani. Fava’s fate is sealed. He will pay the ultimate price, but his students will continue his work.
- ULTIMO TANGO A PARIGI (Last Tango in Paris) by Bernardo Bertolucci with Marlon Brando, Maria Schneider, Jean-Pierre Léaud, Maria Michi, Massimo Girotti – Italy-France 1972, 129’ – April 28 – Premiere of the film restored in 2018 by Cineteca Nazionale-CSC.
Paul meets Jeanne and they begin an extended but purely anonymous sexual relationship, in which they do not even tell each other their names. As times goes by, their story of loneliness and marginalization comes to light: he is an alcoholic coping with a difficult past, while she is preparing to get married but is not able to escape Paul’s sickening demands. One day, in the middle of a tango competition, Jeanne tells Paul she does not want to see him again. He begs for another chance and chases her back to their apartment, where she ultimately shoots him.
“Ultimo tango a Parigi” Event
The Petruzzelli Theatre in Bari will host on April 28th at 20.30 the world première of Ultimo Tango a Parigi, in a 4k restoration by the great cinematographer Vittorio Storaro (winner of 3 Academy Awards) for the Cineteca Nazionale of Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia. The legendary film by Bertolucci – 2 Academy Awards nominations, a Nastro d’argento award, a David di Donatello award, and two Golden Globes nominations – will be released in Italy in May by CSC Distribution. It is an event of great relevance. The film, nowadays a cinema classic, caused a scandal when it was released; censorship gave way to a legal action against the film in Italy, which ended with a ban on January 29, 1976. The film was later redeemed in 1987. Ultimo tango a Parigi was a great success in terms of audience, the film was in second place at the Italian box office in 1972-1973 and then, once redeemed in 1987, became the top-grossing ever in Italian cinema. Up to 2016 Bertolucci’s film was the most successful Italian film in terms of revenues, with 15,623,773 tickets sold. In 2002 it ranked no. 48 in the list of the “100 best romantic films of all times” by the American Film Institute.
- NUOVO CINEMA PARADISO. 30 ANNI DOPO
At 4pm on April 28th, in the Petruzzelli Theatre, the festival will present, introduced by the film director, the restoration by Cineteca di Bologna of Nuovo cinema Paradiso by Giuseppe Tornatore (125’), 30 years after September 29th, 1988, when Bari hosted the triumphant absolute world première with the entire cast in attendance (Philippe Noiret, Jacques Perrin, Brigitte Fossey, Salvatore Cascio, Antonella Attili, besides music composer Ennio Morricone and producers Franco Cristaldi and Alexandre Mnouchkine).
International Panorama
It is a competitve program, with 12 films from all over the world having their Italian or international première at Bif&st. An audience jury of 30 selected members, chaired by renowned novelist and former judge Gianrico Carofiglio, will confer the following awards:

Sixteen-year-old Nisha lives a double life. At home with her family she is the perfect Pakistani daughter, but when out with her friends, she is a normal Norwegian teenager. When her father catches her in bed with her boyfriend, Nisha’s two worlds brutally collide. Her parents decide to kidnap her and place her with relatives in Pakistan. Here, in a country she has never been to before, Nisha is forced to adapt to her parents’ culture.
- CHARMØREN (The Charmer) by Milad Alami with Ardalan Esmaili, Soho Rezanejad, Susan Taslimi, Lars Brygmann – Denmark-Sweden-France, 2017, 100’ – April 23
An intense psychological drama about Esmail, a young Iranian man who is looking to meet women who can secure his stay in Denmark. As time is running out he falls in love and his past catches up with him
- UNE PART D’OMBRE by Samuel Tilman with Fabrizio Rongione, Myriem Akheddiou, Yoann Blanc – Belgium-Switzerland-France 2017, 90’ – April 23
David is a happy young father. He has a wife whom he loves, two adorable young children, and a tight knit group of friends with whom he and his family always go away on holiday. However, upon returning from their last trip away in the Vosges, David is taken in for questioning by the police as part of a murder investigation. Before long, the investigation reveals that all is not what it seems to be behind the happy and respectable facade of David’s life. Doubt begins to spread and sides are drawn.

Fortuna, a 14-year-old Ethiopian girl, has had no news of her parents since they crossed the Mediterranean Sea. Together with other refugees, she is given shelter for the winter in a Swiss catholic monastery. While she waits for her fate to be decided by the Swiss authorities, Fortuna finds out she is pregnant. The choice she will have make and the arrival of the refugees will give rise to concern
- BARLEY FIELDS ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN by Tian Tsering with Tsering Choekyi, Pema Chokey, Samten Dhondup, Jamyang Choezom – United Kingdom 2017, 88’ – April 24
In the remote mountains of Tibet, a teenage girl must choose between supporting her family after her father’s political imprisonment or joining a group of oppressed nuns on their journey to freedom.
- DEN 12.MANN (The 12th Man) by Harald Zwart with Thomas Gullestad, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Marie Blockhus – Norway 2017, 135’ – April 25 The 12th Man tells the story of the Norwegian war hero Jan Baalsrud’s legendary escape from the Nazis during World War II.
- VOINA ANNY (Anna’s War) by Aleksej Fedorčenko with Marta Kozlova, Russia 2018, 75’ – April 25
It is the year 1941. Amidst the mass coordinated execution of Jews, the entire family of a 6-year-old Anna dies. Her mother covers Anna up with her own body, and the girl miraculously survives. She hides in the disused chimney in the Nazi commander’s office – without food or water, in solitude and fear. So begins a story of the struggle for life that lasts for over two years, a fight against the huge and terrifying world of adults. The story of a war in which a little Jewish girl prevails.

Southern Italy. Rosa, a woman who is struggling with her past, lives in a trailer in the countryside. She owes Gino her life, along with everything she has. Gino has some cultivated land and a petrol station, where Rosa works. When Rosa meets Nathaniel, a Frenchman who works for Gino, her life will completely change.

The execution of 200 Greek resistance fighters and Communists by the German occupiers on May 1st, 1944 in Kaisariani, as reprisal for the Greek Resistance ambush against Nazis.

- UN PAS IN URMA SERAFIMILOR (One Step Behind the Seraphim) by Daniel Sandu with Ştefan Iancu, Vlad Ivanov, Ali Amir – Romania 2017, 147’ – April 27
Romania, nowadays. Gabriel,a 15-year-old teen, wants to become a priest and is admitted to an Orthodox College. Realizing the system is totally corrupted, he is rapidly with 3 other classmates labelled as rebel students by the school board. Caught in the fight for power, the students learn that lying, stealing and betraying are things they have to master in order to survive in the seminary.
- VENT DU NORD (Northern Wind) by Walid Mattar with Philippe Rebbot, Mohamed Amine Hamzaoui, France-Tunisia-Belgium, 2018, 91’ – April 27
Northern France. Hervé’s factory has been relocated abroad.He’s the only worker ready to accept its closing because he has other plans: become a fisherman and pass this passion on to his son. Suburbs of Tunis, Tunisia, where the factory has been relocated. Foued, unemployed, believes he has found a way to look after his sick mother and especially, to win over the woman he loves. Hervé and Foued’s destinies mirror and echo one another.

A both supernatural and terrestrial journey into the unique cosmos of an author who chooses to treat the human being in his essential corporeal and behavioural nature. The film contains a selection of clips from his Spanish, Italian and French films. The controversial director reflects on his own reputation as “provocateur” which has always followed him, along with censorship, scandals, protests and success. We find his answers, ironical and sharp, as well as those of his most renowned and affectionate supporters: Marcello Mastroianni, Ugo Tognazzi, Michel Piccoli, Philippe Noiret and Ferreri himself, Roberto Benigni, Hanna Schygulla, Isabelle Huppert, Andréa Ferreol, Ornella Muti, Dante Ferretti and the great film critic Serge Toubiana.

Salvatore and Felice, two somewhat naïve friends, decide to get away from their hometown in Puglia and embark on an incredible journey across Europe, which takes them first to Rotterdam and then to Iceland. Despite some misadventures and yet thanks to the help of an extravagant woman named Anke, they will discover how it feels to be alive and truly happy, as well as belong to a “modern family,” both bizarre and comfortable.

To oppose a fate which appears destined, both the workers and nuns join forces and decide to create a “business” beyond the norm. Yet, they just might need a “miracle” to save their lives and souls …

Cinema & Science: Werner Herzog
Following the extremely successful “Cinema & Science” program in 2017, with the patronage of Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR) and of the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV), Bif&st 2018 will present seven documentaries by the great German director Werner Herzog. After each screening an eminent scientist will comment, for and together with the audience, the images previously screened. The event is coordinated by Orsetta Gregoretti and Silvia Mattoni, of CNR communication office, and it is organized in collaboration with Bari’s Università degli Studi Aldo Moro and with Bari’s Politecnico. The seven Herzog films in the Multicinema Galleria will be introduced by Margarethe von Trotta – together with film critic Klaus Eder – and will be commented by scientists Enrico Alleva, Massimo Caccia, Carlo Doglioni (president of INGV), Domenico Laforenza, Antonio Meloni, Massimiliano Pasqui, Guido Ventura, and by Vito Pertosa. Cinema & Art
An inseparable match counting dozens of film masterpieces which blended images of art and of (moving) cinema. Three important films will be presented, one if which – by Luca Verdone – is a world première. This section will be an experiment, in order to develop a much larger program in future editions of Bif&st:

Cinema & Musica: Luis Bacalov

Cinema and medicine are closely related: cinema has narrated suffering, illness, joys and tragedies, and medicine has conveyed its successes, its uncertainties, doubts and certainties through what is surely one of the greatest cultural media. Bif&st hosts the program Cinema & Medicine in 2018, a sort of pilot meant to become a structured yearly collaboration, drifting among various branches of medicine and focusing, today, on dysfunctions of the autism spectrum of children and on pathologies of sense organs (sight and hearing). Nicola Laforgia is the curator of this program.

RETROSPECTIVES
Memory, History: Festival Marco Ferreri
For the large retrospective dedicated to Marco Ferreri – in collaboration with Cineteca Nazionale of Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, RAI Teche and Cineteca di Bologna – Bif&st already announced the 34 titles which include the feature films, short films, documentaries, TV programs and the documentaries about Ferreri. Also a large Ferreri photo exhibition, from the Photo Archive of Cineteca Nazionale, will be set, as in previous years, in open air all around the Petruzzelli Theatre.
Memory, History: Festival Franco Cristaldi
On September 29, 1988, the EuropaCinema festival created and directed by Felice Laudadio presented the world première of Giuseppe Tornatore’s Nuovo Cinema Paradiso, which later obtained the Jury Special Award in Cannes festival and the Academy Award. This has prompted the tribute to the great producer Franco Cristaldi, with 25 films produced by him, together with the documentary by Massimo Spano Franco Cristaldi e il suo cinema “Paradiso” (2008).
Meetings on Marco Ferreri and Franco Cristaldi
The Barion Club will host at 7pm, from April 22 to 28, seven meetings dedicated to the personality and the work of Marco Ferreri and Franco Cristaldi, coordinated by French film critic Jean Gili.
The Marco Ferreri meetings will see the participations of actors and actresses, of other collaborators who have worked with Ferreri, and of film critics and directors of documentaries about the great filmmaker, such as Serge Toubiana, Andréa Ferréol, Nicoletta Ercole, Tilde Corsi, Maurizio Donadoni, Piera Degli Esposti, Anselma Dell’Olio, Mario Canale, Annarosa Morri, Fabian Cevallos, Francesca Dellera, Anna Melato.
Invited guests for the Franco Cristaldi meetings are Maurizio Nichetti, Marco Bellocchio, Giuseppe Tornatore, Domenico Procacci, Paola Pitagora, Antonella Attili, Ninni Panzera, Paolo Rossetti, and of course Zeudi Araya and Massimo Cristaldi.
Also, La Feltrinelli bookshop will host the presentation of two books: one on actress Laura Morante by Stefano Iachetti and one on the great cinematographer Luciano Tovoli. Also to be presented is the latest issue of film magazine “Bianco e Nero” dedicated to Andrea Camilleri (“Federico Fellini Award for Artistic Excellence” at Bif&st 2014).
Workshops (Università degli Studi, Palazzo ex Poste)
Following the positive experience of countless workshops in the past 9 years, Bif&st 2018 will organize two workshops, each one limited to 30 young participants, selected through their C.V.: one workshop is dedicated to the work of the director of photography, held by Luciano Tovoli; the second one is dedicated to film criticism, held by renown daily film critic Paolo D’Agostini.
Conferences and Meetings in Barion Club and in Colonnato del Palazzo della Provincia di Bari
All films presented in the various sections will have a press conference in the Barion Club, also open to the public, the day after the screening. These are the meetings that will take place in Colonnato del Palazzo della Provincia:

Bif&st for Schools
From April 21 to 28 the Multicinema Galleria, in Screen 1, will host 8 screenings with free admission for high school students of Bari. Films in this program are part of the Tribute to Franco Cristaldi.

In the program “Fuorinorma”, promoted by the film critic and historian Adriano Aprà, Bif&st will present three films: Valzer by Salvatore Maira; N-Capace by Eleonora Danco; Sangue by Pippo Delbono, introduced by film directors Salvatore Maira e Eleonora Danco.
